Alternanthera sessilis

Alternanthera sessilis grows up to 1 metre tall. It is an aquatic plant known by several common names. It is used as a vegetable specially in Sri Lanka and some Asian countries.

Nine compounds were isolated and identified as phaeophytin a, pheophytin, oleanoic acid , beta-sitosterol, 3beta-hydroxystigmast-5-en-7-one, alpha-spinasterol, 24-methylenecycloartanol, cycloeucalenol, phytol.[1]

Succeeds in sun or moderate shade. Prefers a loamy, alkaline soil, but can succeed in a wide range of soils. Plants can be grown in moist to wet soil and in shallow water[3]
