Mudras are also used daily in therapy. Such mudras are to be practised for not less than 50 minutes a day followed by the prana mudra for 15 minutes. Therapeutic mudras can be practised as many times as possible till the health is restored. But, the duration must be a minimum of 50 minutes per day, so that the proportion of elements gets changed and the health i restored gradually. After health has been restored, these mudras are to be discontinued. Therapeutic mudras decrease the elements or get them balanced.
All therapeutic mudras are to be followed by prana mudra. For example:
- To control diabetes - Apana mudra is to be followed by Prana Mudra.
- For curing paralysis, parkinsons, joint pain, arthritis, spondylitis, vayu mudra is to be followed by prana mudra.
- For controlling blood pressure vyana mudra is to be practied (50 minutes for 2-3 times a day) followed by prana mudra 15 minutes each.
If one can not perform therapeutic mudras for 50 minutes at a time, then, they can practice them in 3 parts - 15 minutes each, 3 times a day, followed by prana mudra 5 minutes each.
"Optional mudras for daily practice"
- Akasha mudra : Provides calcium, one pointedness during meditation.
- Varuna mudra : For acquiring a glowing skin and balancing moisture in the body.
These mudras are to be practised for 10 minutes daily.
Mudras may be practised a per ones own schedule or they can be practised as and when time permits. They can also be performed one after other.
A sample of daily routine for practising mudras
Begin the day with a glass of water (magnetised if you wish). Then sit in front of the Tulasi plant and do OMKAR recitation for 21 times. Tulasi gives the highest oxygen in the morning and OMKAR recitation is a form of pranayama. Perform jnana mudra while chanting OMKAR. Omkar can be practised as follows:
Make the sound for 4 seconds, the U for 8 seconds and nesal sound MMM foe 16 seconds. This way carbondioxide is continuously cleared from lungs. Then breathe in so that lungs are filled with oxygen from tulasi, which inturn improves hemoglobin.
Then have morning tea. later, whenever you get time perform prithvi mudra for 10 minutes. After lunch vayu mudra for 10 minute followed by apana mudra for digestion (or Apan + Vayu mudra together). In the evening perform Dhyana mudra for 10 minutes while praying. At night practise prana mudra. This could even be done while watching TV or listening to music. Lastly, before going to bed shoonya vayu mudra is to be practised which will prevent all diseases.
