Yoga Sutra 1.14

स तु दीर्घकालनैरन्तर्यसत्कारासेवितो दृढभूमिः ॥१४॥

sa tu dīrghakāla nairantarya satkāra-ādara-āsevito dṛḍhabhūmiḥ ॥14॥

  1. sah: that (abhyāsa)
  2. tu: but, however, in fact
  3. dīrghakāla: long time (dirgha = long; kala = time)
  4. nairantarya: without interruption
  5. satkāra: with devotion, sincerity, reverence
  6. āsevito: practiced, cultivated, done with assiduous attention
  7. dṛḍhabhūmiḥ: solid foundation, firmly rooted, of firm ground (dridha = firm; bhumih = ground)


This practice becomes firm-grounded when continued with reverent devotion and without interruption over a long period of time.


Foundation of abhyasa - According to Patanjali, abhyasa should be practiced with complete faith, continue uninterrupted for a very long period of time. When done in such way, abhyasa becomes firmly established and a part of one´s nature. Here, long time refers to years of practice, sometimes ages and many births. It is not important how long it is going to take, but what matters is one should continue with utmost devotion and complete faith.

¨Patanjali declares that if we practice abhyasa with faith and conviction continuously for a long time, it will definitely bring about a blockage of the fivefold vrittis of the mind.¨
