The name of this pose comes from "parsva" meaning "side", "ut" meaning "intense" , and "tan" meaning "to stretch", and "asana" meaning "posture" or "seat.

Benefits of this pose are: stretching of the hamstrings, improving the balance, creating length in the spine, and massaging the internal organs. Practice this pose with caution if you have: back injuries, hamstring injuries, high blood pressure or headaches.
