The tree produces a beautiful timber and is commonly harvested from the wild, bark thin, smooth, dark colored with prominent patches, exfoliating both for local use and for trade. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in large, rectangular plates, white or yellowish insidethe IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011).

A plant of the moist tropics, where it is found at elevations up to 1,100 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 26 - 33°c, but can tolerate 8 - 27°c.<ref name="How to plant/cultivate"/>
