This tree is planted as an ornamental for its showy, scented flowers, and as a botanical specimen for its interesting fruit. <ref name="uses"/> the trees are grown extensively in Shiva temples in India. The flowers are called shivalinga flowers in hindi; nagamalli flowers or mallikarjuna flowers in telugu.
