Avatāra means descent, advent or incarnetion of god. There are ten Avatāra's of vishnu: Matsya (Fish), Kurma (Tortoise), Varaha (Boar), Narasimha (Man-lion), Vaamana (Dwarf), Parashurama, Raama (Hero of the epic ramayana), Krisha (Hero of the epic Mahaabharatha), Balaraama and kalki.
