Śabdajñānānupātī vastuśūnyo vikalpaḥ ॥9॥

  1. Śabda: word, sound
  2. jñāna: cognition
  3. anupāti: following upon
  4. vastu: object
  5. śūnyaḥ: empty
  6. vikalpaḥ: fancy, imagination

Following upon knowledge through words but empty of an object is fancy.
OR
Verbal delusion arises when words do not correspond to reality.

Vikalpa - unfounded belief is imagination without the basis of an object. It is a creation of our mind. Unlike right and false knowledge, there is no real object in vikalpa.
