Phragmites karka spreads naturally and can be propagated by division and by seed. A procedure has been developed for the large scale micropropagation of Phragmites karka from axillary buds, with buds from the lower and middle stem giving best results. Multiple shoot formation and root initiation occurred on Murashige and Skoog basal medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l benzyladenine (BA), 0.5 mg/l kinetin and 2% sucrose.<ref name="How to plant/cultivate"/>
