Alternanthera sessilis

Alternanthera sessilis grows up to 1 metre tall. It is an aquatic plant known by several common names. It is used as a vegetable specially in Sri Lanka and some Asian countries. This plant is belongs to Amarantheceae family.

Uses

Intestinal cramps, Fever, Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Bronchitis, Asthma, Lung troubles, Fever, Scabies, Cuts, Boils.[1]

Parts Used

Flowers, Tender top, Leaves.

Chemical Composition

It contains nine compounds were isolated and identified as phaeophytin a, pheophytin, oleanoic acid , beta-sitosterol, 3beta-hydroxystigmast-5-en-7-one, alpha-spinasterol, 24-methylenecycloartanol, cycloeucalenol, phytol etc.[2]

Mode of Propagation

Seeds, Division of underground stems, Nodal cuttings.

How to plant/cultivate

Succeeds in sun or moderate shade. Prefers a loamy, alkaline soil, but can succeed in a wide range of soils. Plants can be grown in moist to wet soil and in shallow water[4]

Commonly seen growing in areas

Coastal mesophyll vine forest, Palm-dominated forests, Notophyll vine forests.
