Upaniṣad is the word is derived from the prefexes 'Upa' and 'ni', added to the root 'sad'. It means sitting down near a guru to receive spiritual instruction . The upanishads are the philosophical portion of the Hindus, dealing with the nature of man and the universe and the union of the individual soul or self with the universal soul.
