In cultivation it is likely to be no more than 5 metres tall. The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use as a food, medicine and source of materials. It is cultivated for medicinal use in the homegardens of southern Yunnan, can be used as a pioneer in reforestation and is sometimes grown as an ornamental.

Viburnum cylindricum has a range extending from the warm temperate regions of China and India (where it can be found at elevations up to 3,300 metres) to the tropical regions of Malaysia and Indonesia (usually at elevations in excess of 1,000 metres).<ref name="How to plant/cultivate"/>
